OneTIME Tool - MT Center Gauge & Doweling Jig - Retired November, 11 2019
When you drop the MT Center Gauge on the edge of your stock and squeeze the two sides together, the marking bar is perfectly centered on your stock. It can’t help it. It’s simple geometry. The middle of a parallelogram is the middle of a parallelogram no matter how close or far away the top and bottom are from each other. So, the first and easiest thing to do with this tool is to drop a pencil point into the hole in the marking bar and scribe the exact center of your stock. “Got it…it’s a center finder”. Well, that’s only its first trick. Each of the stainless-steel interchangeable marking bars has a specific width. You can lay out mortises and tenons perfectly centered on your stock just as easily as you pinpointed dead center. If that isn’t enough, change the center bar again and you have an indexable doweling jig.
MT Center Gauge and Doweling Jig
The MT Center Gauge eliminates the guesswork from precisely centering mortise and tenon joints. The precision-machined parallel arms quickly adjust to the stock thickness, placing the marking bar right in the middle. Just scribe each side of the bar and you’re done.
Choose from four mortise and tenon widths (five for the metric system). Changing the width of your mortise and tenon layout couldn’t be easier. Simply remove the two thumb screws holding the marking bar in place and switch to the width you want. The marking bars come in 1/4", 3/8", 7/16" and 1/2" widths for the inch version and 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm and 10mm for the metric version. These are all the sizes you need for stock from 1/2" to a full 1" thick and more. Each marking bar is precision-machined from stainless steel (ideal for working with marking knives), and each has a pencil guide at its exact center (you can mark center no matter which width marking bar you have in). The parallel arms open to accommodate stock up to 2" thick.
Centered Doweling Jig. To switch to doweling mode, remove the marking bar and attach the doweling jig bar. To use, simply align the precision-machined notches on the jig’s doweling bar with your dowel location, hold the jig and drill. Slide the jig to the next location, align and drill. No need to clamp the jig or tighten knobs. The MT Doweling Jig comes with six stainless steel drill guide-bushings; three sized for 1/4" and three for 3/8" drill bits.
There’s an adjustable end stop on the doweling jig bar that makes it dead simple to make perfectly intersecting right angle joints (the rail and stile joints in cabinets, for instance). The end stop can be set up to 2-5/8" from the edge of your board to the center of the first hole…or up to 65mm if you look at the metric scale.
If you need a series of dowel holes down the length of your board, drill the first set, then slide the MT Doweling Jig down and drop the included index pin into the last drilled hole and drill the next set. Keep going as long as you need.
You can get the MT Center Gauge and the MT Doweling Jig separately. Or, if you do both mortise and tenon work and doweling, you can get complete kits in inch or metric. The kits include the full set of inch marking bars or the full set of metric marking bars and the doweling jig bar. Or, if you’re like most woodworkers these days and work in both inch and metric depending on the project, the Deluxe Kit includes all nine marking bars and the doweling jig bar. The individual jigs and the inch or metric sets come in a custom molded, foam lined case. The Deluxe Kit is available in a similar custom molded case or a Systainer case.
