When cutting mortise and tenon joints with a router, you want on-dimension performance, chatter-free surfaces, smooth operation and long tool life. Typical spiral router bits check a lot of those boxes, but can self-feed when plunging and often chatter when there's only material on one side (like on long tenons). The new Ultra-Shear Variable Helix Joinery Bits plunge more reliably because there's very little angle to the spiral at the tip. The helix angle increases moving toward the shank, increasing chip removal and delivering smooth surfaces in both enclosed cuts (mortises) and single-sided cuts (tenons).
After our initial testing with both Multi-Router and PantoRouter joinery machines, we decided to offer the Variable Helix Joinery Bits in the sizes most often needed when using these machines and in extra-long cut lengths you won't find in other brands of spiral router bits. Imagine machining a 2-1/2" long tenon with virtually no chatter and dimensional consistency measured in thousandths.
Now for Shaper Origin, too! When cutting joinery on the Shaper Origin, the tool's amazing capabilities can be handcuffed by router bits that chatter, scream and burn. What's more, finding cut lengths sufficient for furniture joinery can be challenging. Ultra-Shear addressed both issues with the new 8mm Solid Carbide Variable Helix Joinery Bits. Available in cut lengths of 20, 25, and 35 mm, these are the bits you need for serious joinery on the Origin.
But..you don't have to have an expensive machine to take advantage of these bits. If you're mortising with a plunge router and a fence system, the controlled feed and superb chip clearance will out-perform any other spiral bit on the market. You may have thought your smaller router could only use 1/4" bits, but take a look…many brands have 8mm collets available, either from the manufacturer or from 3rd party accessory companies.
Buy direct from the manufacturer and pocket the savings. We’re confident you won’t find an American-made bit of the same design for less.
