All premium dado sets…including our Ultimate Stacked Dado Set…have the outside bevel teeth ground ever so slightly higher than the chisel teeth and the chippers. Whether you call them "bat ears", "cat ears", or something a little saltier, the corners of the dado have tiny triangles. They're not there to annoy you. Without them you would almost certainly get tear-out in veneered plywood, particularly on cross-grain cuts. The "bat ears" don't affect the blind joints typical in cabinet construction, but ruin the look of exposed joinery when you're building furniture. Ultra-Shear's new Flat Top Dado Blade Set uses 24-tooth outside blades with a 5° negative hook. All 24 are ground square and exactly the same height as the chippers. They cut a perfectly square, flat-bottomed dado that enhances your box joints, half-laps, bridle joints, and other exposed joinery.
Square Corners and Flat Bottoms for Flawless Exposed Joinery
Just like the Ultimate Stacked Dado Set, the Ultra-Shear Flat Top Dado Blade Set uses 12-tooth chippers with a 5° positive hook angle versus the 2- or 4-tooth negative hook chippers you'll find on other brands. The positive hook of the chippers cuts smoothly and counter-acts the negative hook of the outside blades, reducing feed resistance. The set includes one 1/4" chipper, two 1/8" chippers and one 1/16" chipper. When you need a minor adjustment, we've included magnetic shims that stay in place as you install your blades, unlike paper or plastic shims.
