Ultra-Shear's Folding Miter Bit gives you a lightning fast way to make attractive small boxes from one piece of wood with just four cuts. Just set your fence to match the outside height of the box, run all 4 edges against the fence, cut the extra pieces out of the corners with a sharp chisel or hobby knife and you're ready for glue (we recommend two passes…one at nearly full depth and a second dialed in to leave the tiniest possible sliver at the apex of the miter).
You may have seen this technique used with standard vee-groove bits. But, most leave a fuzzy, ragged cut in the bottom of the vee. Our Folding Miter Bit features a flat bottom just a few thousandths of an inch wide. This eliminates any fuzz that could prevent the joint from closing and provides the perfect hinge to close the joint. We make the Folding Miter Bit in both 1/2" and 1/4" shank. The 1/2" shank version will cut miter fold joints in material up to 3/4" thick. If you're using a smaller router, the 1/4" shank version works in material up to 1/2" thick.
