Ultra-Shear's new 3-Flute Extended Reach Bowl Bits have a 1-1/4" cutting diameter with a corner radius on the bottom and a pilot bearing above the cutting edge. This arrangement lets you follow a pattern to hollow out a recess in your workpiece. With an overall length of 3-1/2", these bits can cut a 2-1/4" deep recess with most plunge routers. Use them to make bowls, serving trays, candy dishes, desk valets, charcuterie boards and dozens of other projects in any shape imaginable…bowls no longer have to be perfectly round!
The process is simple. Make a template the shape you want for the bowl using 3/4" plywood or MDF. Secure your blank to your workbench and secure the template to the blank. Make cuts 1/4" deep (or less) keeping the bearing against the template and cleaning out the rest of the recess, as well. Repeat until you reach the depth you want. After you have made a few passes and the wall of the bowl is established, you can remove the template, which allows you to go deeper.

Combine joinery techniques with bowl routing. Nothing says you have to start your bowl project with a piece of solid wood. In the example pictured above, we've started with a stave construction made with our recently introduced Bird's Mouth Bits and used the Extended Reach Bowl Bits and a template to make the inside perfectly round and create a subtle radius transition from the side wall to the bottom of the bowl.
We offer the Extended Reach Bowl Bits with three different radius profiles…1/8", 3/16" and 1/4". If you want to go deeper than 2-1/4", the 1-1/4" cutting diameter works with most brands of shank extensions (follow manufacturer's instructions, take lighter cuts and slow the router down when using shank extensions).
