Woodpeckers latest OneTIME Tools, the Marking Gauges and Panel Marking Gauges, give you both knife cutting and pencil marking in one tool. When doing hand-cut joinery nothing beats the physical guide provided to your tool by a marking gauge with a knife. But, when you’re working with machinery, the higher visibility of a pencil mark makes set-up easier. Our marking gauges give you both…you don't even have to remove one to use the other, just rotate the tool 90° to switch between mechanical pencil and razor-sharp circular marking knife.
Aluminum or stainless, knife or pencil, large or small, standard or metric, the choice is yours.
For mortise and tenon layout, we include a second knife and an array of spacers. Place the proper number of spacers between the two knives to precisely set the mortise walls or tenon cheeks. You can space the knives at any gap between 1/8" and 1/2" in 1/16" increments. The beam is hollow with a threaded cap in the end, providing storage for the second knife, any un-used spacers and the mechanical pencil.
When you need a more visible line (and one that leaves no trace behind on your final project), rotate the beam 90° and install our specially designed mechanical pencil. It threads into the beam, protruding just slightly below. The pencil uses standard .9mm lead, which is advanced by the hex-head lead screw. These are the only marking gauges on the market that offer both knife-marking and a custom-built mechanical pencil.
Subtle details make these tools a joy to use. For instance, there are two laser-engraved scales. One calibrated to the end of the knife and a second calibrated to the center of the mechanical pencil. Whichever marking tool is facing your workpiece, the appropriate scale is facing up.
You won’t have to keep track of an Allen wrench for adjustments, either…there’s one built right into the locking knob. Each Marking & Panel Gauge also comes with a wall-mountable Rack-It, keeping your tool ready to go to work anytime you need it.
Both sizes are available in two materials. The beams are available in “Woodpeckers Red” anodized aluminum or stainless steel. You won’t go wrong with either version. Some folks find the white engraving on the red aluminum easier to read in poor lighting. Others prefer the heft and durability of stainless steel. Both the Marking Gauge and Panel Marking Gauge have fence lengths that provide solid support as you’re guiding along the edge of your stock (3-1/2" on the Marking Gauge and 6-1/2" on the Panel Marking Gauge).
Like all OneTIME Tools, the Marking Gauges and Panel Marking Gauges are only made to order, precisely machined and carefully inspected in our Strongsville, Ohio factory (just south of Cleveland). The deadline to order yours is Monday, March 11, 2024. Once orders are filled, these tools will be retired from our product line. Delivery is scheduled for May 2024.
