Hard Coat anodizing yields exceptional surface hardness, similar to the best tool steels. That tough exterior surface eliminates abrasion and resists UV fading.

Like every 1281 we make, the 1281 Special Edition starts with a central core that is precisely milled from cast and ground tool plate aluminum…the most stable aluminum in the world. The stability of the material and the methods we use to machine the core allow us to hold tolerance to ±.0085°…that’s within one thousandth of an inch at the far end of the 12-inch blade.
To this highly accurate core, we add cheeks to make the base thicker. The cheeks are narrower than the core by a quarter-inch, forming a shoulder not found in traditional square designs. The shoulder allows the square to rest on the edge of a board without you holding on. Once you use a Woodpeckers square with this feature, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. To keep the shoulder from interfering with your layout work, we notched it in the corner, allowing you to mark all the way to the edge of your material.
There's so much to love about any 1281. You’ll notice the heft and balance of the tool when you first hold it. Between the finger grooves milled in the cheeks and the opening near the end of the blade, you'll find a comfortable grip any direction you need to hold the square. The scales are laser-engraved to a tolerance of .004" total accumulated error over the length of the blade, and squareness is held to ±.0085°. The Special Edition adds its super low-friction surface and tool steel hardness to the list.
