OneTIME Tool - Pocket Compass - 2018 - Retired August 27, 2018

OTT-POCKET-COMPASS-2018

A traditional divider-style two-legged compass leaves a lot to be desired in a woodworking shop. The slightest nudge can change the setting. The pivot point is approaching the stock at an angle, so it likes to skate out of position. And, they’re just plain awkward to carry around (not to mention potentially painful!)

Our product developers looked at this problem and decided to build a compact compass that you could safely carry in your pocket and depend on to layout accurate curves. Our original Pocket Compass will draw a circle from 1" to 7", works easier than a divider compass, and takes up as much room in your pocket as a butane lighter. On top of all that, it’s just cool to play with. It was wildly popular in its original appearance as a OneTIME Tool, but a lot of customers asked for the same concept with more capacity, so now we have two models, the original and the Pocket Compass XL (from 2" to 21").

It works somewhat similar to a traditional beam compass, except, the beam of the Pocket Compass rests on the surface of your work. That means you’re not trying to balance the whole tool on two sharp points while swinging your hands in a perfect arc.

Here’s how it works. Adjust the two-piece body so that your desired measurement is either in the directly indexed pencil hole or the “+2” or “+3” holes. For example, if you adjust it to the 2” diameter mark, you can draw a 2” circle, a 4” circle or a 5” circle (or even larger on the XL model). The stainless-steel pivot point is safely stored in the end of the beam. Take it out, put it through the hole in the opposite end, locate it at your axis point, drop a pencil through the correct hole and draw your arc.

You’ll find repositioning your hands and getting back on line to complete the arc to be much easier and more accurate than doing the same thing with a divider compass or a typical beam compass, because the whole thing is lying flat on your workpiece. Gravity is working with you instead of against you.

We machine the pocket compass using CNC mills, then anodize the surface in our familiar “Woodpecker Red” color. The anodizing isn’t just for looks. It protects the surface from corrosion and wear. Finally, we laser engrave the scales in both Imperial and Metric measurements.

The Pocket Compass and Pocket Compass XL are available separately. But, if you want them both, order the set. You’ll save a few bucks and get one of our American-made, heavy duty 0.9mm mechanical pencils and a custom fit storage case.

Like all our OneTIME Tools, Woodpeckers Pocket Compass and Pocket Compass XL are only made to order. The deadline to order yours is Monday, August 27, 2018. Once orders are filled, they will be retired from our product line. Delivery is scheduled for December 2018.

The Pocket Compass and Pocket Compass XL are manufactured in our Strongsville, Ohio factory, just south of Cleveland. Proudly Made in the USA!
