Live Edge Slabs Katalox (Mexican Royal Ebony): Strength, Density, and Deep Elegance
Katalox is one of the world's strongest and stiffest woods. Often called "Mexican Royal Ebony," it features a deep plum-to-black heartwood that serves as an exceptional and sustainable alternative to African Ebony. Its incredible density and natural luster make it a top choice for furniture makers. These live edge slabs range in size from 12” – 15” wide, 30” – 48” long and 1.25’ thick. Some have minor checking or tear-out, this is not considered a defect.

Exceptional Durability and World-Class Workability for Custom Projects
Katalox (Swartzia cubensis), native to Southern Mexico and Central America, is a powerhouse in the world of exotic hardwoods. Boasting a Janka hardness of 3,660 lbf, it is significantly harder and stronger than White Oak or Hard Maple.
The heartwood ranges from a dark reddish-brown to a near-black "royal" purple, often contrasted sharply by a pale, yellowish-white sapwood. This striking contrast allows for unique, eye-catching designs. While its high density and natural oil content can make it challenging to glue and machine, the reward is a wood that polishes to a glass-like finish and offers unparalleled durability.
These live-edge slabs will be the envy of all your woodworking friends. Katalox provides a level of sophistication and physical resilience that few other species can match.
Each of these slabs is a unique piece of wood, and no two will be alike. We have made every effort to describe them fairly and accurately
