Precision Template and Guide Bushings Make Repeatable Dog Hole Patterns In Bench Tops a Breeze
Easily Add More Versatility To Your Bench And Work Surfaces. Woodworkershave come to know the benefits of strategically placed dog holes in work surfaces. They facilitate workholding for a variety of chores and can provide real assistance in project assembly operations. Traditional benches have orderly rows of dog holes used in conjunction with vises, holdfasts and stops. Today, multi-function benches like the Festool MFT, have taken the traditional dog hole to a new level of usefulness.
Precision Hole Placement Is Key. Carefully milled dog holes make workholding and assembly tasks easier and faster. The problem is that making bench tops and work surfaces with precisely placed dog holes is difficult to do. It just can’t be done well using a hand drill or drill press.
Woodpeckers New Hole-Boring Jig To The Rescue. With this new OneTIME Tool you’ll be making dog hole patterns with near CNC precision and can now easily make a replacement top for your Festool MFT. The Hole-Boring Jig starts with a sturdy 3/8" thick phenolic template that’s precision machined to create perfect holes in a very precise array. The template is 13" x 17" and has 12 holes with 96mm spacing and is used in conjunction with two solid brass template guide bushings. One bushing will machine 20mm holes and the other 3/4" holes when using a 1/2" diameter router bit. The Jig also comes with three stainless steel pins that fit additional holes along two template edges. These pins index the template off the edge or corner of your workpiece.
How To Route The Dog Holes. To start the hole pattern, use the stainless steel pins to index the template along the edge of your work piece then clamp it in place. Use your router with either the 20mm or 3/4" template guide bushing to rout as many holes as possible. Then insert three of the matching red indexing pins, move the clamps to a new location and finish routing the first set of holes. From then on it’s simply a matter of moving the template to a new location while indexing it to a couple finished holes, add clamps and continue routing. In just a few minutes you’ll have an array of perfectly sized holes for your work surface.
