Ultra-Shear Replacement Inserts
When we started the Ultra-Shear project, we wanted our inserts to perform at a higher level than any others on the market. We talked to dozens of carbide manufacturers throughout the country, and finally found one that understands the special requirements of woodturning. Turns out our perfect partner was just a couple hours away, right here in Ohio. What’s so special about these particular carbide inserts? Briefly, it’s the grain structure of the carbide, the level of polish on the face surface and the quality of the grind on the bevel. There’s more detail in the full description down below, but before you scroll down there, you should know that our inserts also fit most Easy Wood® tools and some Rockler® tools as well as our own Ultra-Shear tools. You can take advantage of Ultra-Shear edge performance even before you own Ultra-Shear tools.
The Keys to Ultra-Shear Inserts
Nano-grain carbide. Almost any carbide blend can deliver a long-lasting edge, but normal carbides are designed to be ground to a moderate edge and stay there a long time. They just don’t have the fine grain structure necessary to be ground to a really keen edge like steel tools. But Ultra-Shear inserts use a special nano-grain carbide matrix that rivals high speed steel for fine grain structure. Now you have the best of both worlds, a long-lasting edge that can be ground to a truly keen cutting edge.
Highly polished top face. Just like the flat side of a master woodworker’s chisel or plane iron, the faces of our inserts are ground perfectly flat then polished to a mirror finish. The high polish strengthens and improves the edge by eliminating the grinding scratches.
Extremely fine grind on the bevel. The bevels on our Ultra-Shear inserts are ground using the finest diamond grinding wheels available in the carbide tooling industry. Even without magnification, you can see the difference between the grind quality on Ultra-Shear inserts and any others on the market.
A shape for every job. Our larger square inserts come in three shapes – straight edge, 2-inch radius and 4-inch radius. Similarly, there are two versions of our small square inserts, straight edge and 2-inch radius. Some folks find the radiused profiles easier to use, but the straight edge really shines when forming shoulders on tenons. In our diamond shaped “detail” inserts we offer two options – full sharp and radius. The radius detail insert allows you to create fine beads and coves just by working the tool back and forth…no complicated “rolling beads” or “scooping coves”. The full sharp insert takes the word “detail” to a whole new meaning. It excels at creating fine accent lines and cleaning up tight transition areas.
Get the right insert regardless of your tool brand. In the images above, you’ll find a chart that shows which of our inserts fit other brands of tools. Do your turnings a favor and switch to Ultra-Shear inserts.
