Building them offers hundreds of variations in geometric design with varying combinations of species and angles. But leveling an end grain board should never be done on a jointer or thickness planer. It's not only ineffective, it's potentially dangerous to both you and your planer. Most cutting board builders use a router and a sled to level their end grain boards. Ultra∙Shear's new Compact Spoilboard Bit provides a safe, effective way to smooth and level end grain cutting boards with just about any router you can imagine. Even cordless palm routers can level a glued-up end grain board quickly and safely. The 3-flute design provides 50% more cuts per inch and reduced feed resistance. The 3/4" cutting diameter is large enough to get the job done, but small enough to fit even tiny trim routers.

Ultra-Shear borrowed a technique from metal-cutting tool companies to merge solid carbide spiral cutting efficiency with steel shank economy. Our "Carbide Head" bits have a solid carbide blank brazed to a steel shank. After the head is brazed on, the 3-flute slow-spiral cutting pattern is ground to shape, just like our solid carbide spirals. But we don't have to tie up the machines with turning down the shank, and less machine time means lower prices for you. The result is spiral cutting performance at prices that compete with carbide tipped bits.
In typical use with a sled, you don't need a guide bearing. But we've included one because the size and construction of this bit works great for cleaning up the bottom of dadoes or extending holes that have been drilled by a Forstner bit. The bearing and collar should not interfere with anything, but if they do, they can be removed (or replaced) in seconds.
