Steel Cup Magnet

zteel cup magnet

Rare earth magnets are amazingly powerful. Far stronger than the magnets we played with as kids. Encase one of these marvels into a thick-wall steel cup and now you've focused virtually all of the magnets holding power to one side.

These steel cups aren't the cheap paper thin versions typically found in catalogs. They're machined from solid 1045 steel with optimum wall thickness and consistent outside diameter. (1045 steel has more carbon than softer grades). Cup size is 47/64" O.D. x 3/8” thick.

Ideally, you need to drill a flat bottom hole slightly less in depth than the 3/8” thickness of the steel cup. Holding force is dramatically reduced if the cup isn't in full contact with the mating surface. The cup o.d. is dimensioned to easily fit in a 3/4" hole. There are two different ways to secure the cup, epoxy or a flat head screw. Each has their advantages. Epoxy works well if the hole depth is a little to deep. A #6 or #8 screw is better if you think you want to remove the cup some day. One word of caution, the only way to remove the magnet is from the back with a small pin or hex wrench. So make sure the cup is installed the way you want it before you drop in the magnet.

Sold in pairs, includes (2) cups, (2) magnets and (2) screws.
