Choosing a Router Fence System

Virtually all table based routing can be broken down into three categories: Edge-forming, Shaping and Joinery

Edge-Forming - This is the most basic and common form of routing. Edge-Forming requires a variable fence opening to accommodate different bit diameters. This kind of routing usually involves, rounding, coving and forming profiles that leave at least a small part of the original edge intact. This edge is guided along the face of the fence or against an integrated ball bearing within the router bit itself.

Shaping- Shaping also includes jointing. It requires not just a variable opening but also the ability to offset the in-feed from the out-feed. It results in the complete removal and re-cutting of an edge. Shaping typically
results in molding profiles and jointing for purposes of straightening a concave edge.

Joinery - Precision Joinery is the most demanding function performed on a router table. When performed properly, joinery results in machine-cut dovetails and box joints rivaling the quality of any other method. The only limiting factor is the range of the precision positioner behind the fence and the size of the table. All of our Joinery Systems indicate their travel, or stock width capacity in their names. (i.e. the 17” Incra LS travels 17” and has the capacity per se to dovetail across the edge of a 17” wide board).
