Some background on Hopewell Furnace.
Hopewell Furnace, located in southeastern PA, is a National Historic Site. Set up as an "iron plantation," Hopewell Furnace provided housing and food for workers, raw materials, technical advice and machinery for production, and marketing and transportation to deliver products for sale. From 1771 to 1883, it manufactured iron goods for Philadelphia, New York, and Baltimore. While the most profitable items were stoves, the furnace also cast kettles, machinery, grates, and cannon shot and shells for American forces during the Revolutionary War. The furnace reached its peak between 1820 and 1840, and then gradually was made obsolete by more efficient processes.
